Frank van Vliet: Champion of Ethical Marketing and Strategic Sales Leadership

Frank van VlietFrank van Vliet is a seasoned sales and marketing strategist turned academic, whose career bridges the fast-paced world of business with the principled realm of higher education. With a strong foundation in ethical leadership and decades of experience in revenue-driven roles, van Vliet brings a rare balance of practical industry expertise and academic insight to every classroom he enters.

Currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Baltimore, van Vliet teaches courses in marketing, ethics, and entrepreneurship—equipping the next generation of business leaders with the skills to sell with integrity and lead with purpose. His teaching is deeply rooted in ethical frameworks, emphasizing the importance of trust, transparency, and long-term value creation in customer relationships and brand strategy.

As a Faculty Fellow at the Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics, van Vliet is a leading voice in advancing ethical conversations within sales, marketing, and professional practice. His commitment to principled leadership earned him the prestigious Maxwell G. Armor Chair, recognizing his exceptional contributions as a non-tenured faculty member.

Until his retirement in May 2023 from his full-time role at the University of Baltimore, van Vliet served for over a decade as a Senior Lecturer and Executive in Residence at the Merrick School of Business. There, he played a pivotal role in reimagining the business curriculum—infusing it with real-world marketing strategies and an ethical approach to entrepreneurial growth. Under his mentorship, students didn’t just learn how to build a brand or close a deal—they learned how to do it responsibly, with an eye toward social impact and long-term reputation.

One of his most impactful teaching initiatives continues through the University of Baltimore’s Second Chance Program at Jessup Correctional Institute. In this program, van Vliet teaches ethics, marketing, and entrepreneurship to incarcerated students, helping them harness their potential and apply ethical thinking to business opportunities post-release. The program has grown steadily, with dozens of participants each semester and several graduates moving on to earn MBAs—underscoring the real-world impact of his work.

Before transitioning to academia, van Vliet built a successful career as a high-performing sales and marketing executive. His leadership in strategic planning, business development, and team building consistently delivered measurable growth while remaining rooted in ethical business practices. He now channels this experience into supporting small businesses, startups, and nonprofits—helping them craft sales and marketing strategies that not only drive results but also align with values-driven missions and sustainable success.

Van Vliet holds an MBA from the University of Baltimore, a BSc from the University of Phoenix, and a diploma in Electronic Engineering Technology from Humber College. Whether in the boardroom or the classroom, he remains a steadfast advocate for the idea that business done right can be both profitable and principled.
